Design Brief & Solution
This kitchen has a contemporary architectural feel to it. The contrast of cool and elegant onyx and light grey finishes and block details in the generous sized space amplify the sleek design look. The client’s brief was for a modern kitchen with lots of functionality, where everything could be hidden away behind closed doors to maintain the streamlined, high-end aesthetic. Two bespoke cupboards featuring hide and slide pocket doors were created to conceal a handy breakfast station and a bar area, ideal for entertaining guests. The kitchen flows with open plan living by keeping the doors simple and by using integrated lighting for function and an element of drama. A large island incorporates enough seats for six to create a sociable family hub, and the floating effect of the cabinetry shows extra flooring to gives the illusion of more floorspace space, further amplified by the daylight coming in from the large glass sliding doors and roof lights. The structural pillar and beam required from knocking multiple smaller spaces together have become part of the design element for this amazing kitchen.
Designer’s Favorite Feature
“The floating island has worked very well to create less of a solid block island. The supporting pillar had to be incorporated into the design too, so a minimal flat door and sharp edges have all leant themselves to a clean and modern look.”
